Is your child falling behind in school despite their best efforts? Do you notice that they struggle with reading, writing, or math more than their peers? Learning difficulties can be frustrating and confusing not only for children, but for the families who care about their success. At Conway Psychological Assessment Center, we provide comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations to uncover the reasons behind academic struggles and offer a clear plan for support.
Our learning and academic evaluations are designed to identify specific learning disabilities, cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and any developmental or intellectual delays that may impact academic progress. These assessments are often the first step toward securing effective school-based interventions, accommodations, and educational services.
What We Assess
We evaluate for a range of learning and academic challenges, including:
- Dyslexia (Reading Disorder): Children with dyslexia often have difficulty recognizing words, decoding sounds, or understanding what they read. We assess phonological processing, word recognition, and reading fluency to determine whether a reading-based learning disability is present.
- Dysgraphia (Writing Disorder): Dysgraphia affects written expression, including handwriting, spelling, and organizing ideas on paper. We examine fine motor skills, spelling ability, and written composition to better understand your child’s difficulties with writing.
- Dyscalculia (Math Disorder): A math-based learning disability may show up as difficulty understanding number sense, solving equations, or learning basic math facts. Our assessments look at reasoning, problem-solving, and math fluency to identify specific areas of need.
- IQ and Cognitive Testing: We assess a child’s intellectual functioning using standardized cognitive tests, which evaluate reasoning, memory, processing speed, and verbal/nonverbal skills. This helps us understand your child’s learning profile and how they process information.
- Adaptive Functioning Assessments: These tools measure daily living skills, communication, and social abilities. They are particularly useful for determining whether a child may meet criteria for an intellectual or developmental disability and require more intensive supports.
- Medicaid Waiver Evaluations for Intellectual Disabilities: If your child may qualify for state or federally funded support services due to a developmental or intellectual disability, we provide the formal evaluations required to determine eligibility for Medicaid waivers and long-term assistance.
Why Seek a Psychoeducational Evaluation?
Early identification of a learning disability can make a powerful difference in a child’s academic trajectory and emotional wellbeing. Without appropriate support, many children begin to internalize academic failure as a personal flaw leading to frustration, anxiety, and low self-esteem. A comprehensive evaluation helps reframe the struggle: It’s not a matter of effort, but of need.
Our evaluations provide:
- A clear diagnosis (when appropriate)
- Objective data to support IEP or 504 Plan eligibility
- Recommendations for school-based accommodations, such as extended time, small group instruction, assistive technology, or specialized tutoring
- Documentation for standardized testing accommodations (e.g., ACT, SAT)
- Guidance on private school placement or curriculum modification
- Support for parents in advocating within the school system
